Critical Incident Stress Management or CISM is used to help provide support to those who have been a part of or experienced a traumatic event. When utilized in a timely manner CISM can help to prevent/ minimize long term psychological effects that occur from these events. CISM, is an intervention protocol developed specifically for dealing with traumatic events.  It is a formal, highly structured and professionally recognized process for helping those involved in a critical incident to share their experiences, vent emotions, learn about stress reactions and symptoms and given referral for further help if required.  It is not psychotherapy.  It is a confidential, voluntary and educative process, sometimes called ‘psychological first aid’. (Cardinal) CISM does not replace the need for therapist or mental health assistance. CISM provides a way to talk through the emotions and thoughts of an event that recently occurred, not for long term therapy.

Southeastern Health Care has teamed with New Hanover Regional Medical Center to provide a team to assist in proving CISM when needed to the southeastern region. If you feel that you or a member of your team needs peer support to help them through a difficult time please feel free to reach out. Please call (910)815-5155 for your request and someone will return your call shortly.
